“Chronicle” director Josh Trank has joined the ever-growing ranks of the “Star Wars” universe and will helm a spinoff project, the second of multiple planned stand-alone movies in addition to the franchise’s core saga, Disney and Lucasfilm announced Wednesday.

No details regarding the film’s plot, cast or release date were specified.

“The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood,” Trank said in a statement on starwars.com. “The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

Landing a “Star Wars” gig marks a huge career leap for the 30-year-old director, who made his feature debut with the sci-fi movie “Chronicle” in 2012. The found-footage-style film about a group of teens who gain superpowers from a mysterious glowing rock starred Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan and grossed $126 million worldwide, on a slim $12-million budget.

Trank is currently at work on his sophomore film, a reboot of “The Fantastic Four” for Fox, starring Jordan, Kate Mara, Miles Teller and Jamie Bell. It is slated for release June 19, 2015.

Two weeks ago, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards, a filmmaker enjoying a similarly meteoric rise, will take the reins on the first “Star Wars” spinoff, to be released Dec. 16, 2016.

J.J. Abrams, meanwhile, is in charge of the central storyline and is currently directing “Star Wars: Episode VII,” the first installment of a planned trilogy set 30 years after the original films. “Episode VII” is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
