When it was announced that 1996’s “Independence Day” would have a sequel, social media set ablaze with chatter about the film in which Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum spearhead an effort to defeat aliens attempting to take over Earth. Sunday, 20th Century Fox released the first trailer of “Independence Day: Resurgence,” set for a summer release.

With Roland Emmerich returning to the director’s chair, the movie picks up exactly 20 years later. Though Smith has not returned, most of the original cast has, including Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Goldblum. New addition Liam Hemsworth, however will lead the world against its returning extraterrestrial nemeses.

When “Independence Day” debuted, it shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally.
