Kurt Cobain death scene note mocks Courtney Love

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, the Seattle Police Department has released a trove of unpublished photographs from the scene of the Nirvana frontman’s 1994 suicide.

Some of the pictures are simply sad and harrowing; others add a few details to the exact scene of his death. But a new release from the department is perhaps its most revealing yet -- a note about Cobain’s wife, Courtney Love.

The handwritten note was found at the scene in Cobain’s wallet, and it had been hidden from the public until now. It’s written on Phoenix Hotel stationary, and it’s uncertain whether Cobain was the actual author.

In his original suicide note, Cobain called Love “a goddess ... who sweats ambition and empathy.” But this new note has darker (and possibly sarcastic) undertones about the couple’s marriage -- “Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawful shredded wife...even when she’s a b- with zits and siphoning all (your) money for doping and whoring...”

It’s unclear when the note was written. Cobain and Love had a famously tumultuous marriage with drug abuse and fighting, but they also wrote songs and spoke of deep devotion to each other.

The Phoenix Hotel is a former flophouse in the gritty Tenderloin district of San Francisco that became a favored spot for touring musicians. Despite the ongoing release of unseen new evidence, and a recent re-examination of the case by the Seattle Police Department, the case remains closed and is still deemed a suicide.
