Kelsey Grammer suggests his Republican views cost him an Emmy nod

Share

Kelsey Grammer has been getting great reviews for his role on the Starz drama “Boss,” but what he doesn’t have is an Emmy nomination for his work. And he suspects it may be because he’s a member of the GOP.

“Do I believe it’s possible that some young person, young voting actor, or even older voting member for the Emmys, would sit there and go, ‘Yeah, that’s a great performance, but ooooh, I just hate everything he stands for’?” Grammer asked Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday. “I don’t believe that’s possible,” he said sarcastically.

Leno, who professed to being a big fan of the show, played devil’s advocate, suggesting that perhaps “Boss’” home on the lesser-known cable channel Starz may have played a part in it being overlooked.

“That’s not good news, is it?” Grammer responded.

Also complicating his argument is that he’s previously won five Emmys and been nominated 14 times. His most recent Emmy win was in 2006 for voicing Sideshow Bob on “The Simpsons.” His performance in “Boss” also won him a Golden Globe this year, which was voted on by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., not known for being a hotbed of traditional Republicans.

Still, Grammer’s feelings seemed to be hurt by the Emmy snub, telling Leno: “It’s nothing personal. I’ve been overlooked because the work is not up to standard.” He was kidding.

In a move that will no doubt charm Emmy voters for next year, Grammer also showed off the tattoo of his wife’s name on his abdomen.
