Palm Beach County deputy faces child porn charges

A Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy is facing child pornography charges after more than 30 images and videos were found on a cellphone and a laptop computer at his home, investigators said.

Adam W. Godbey's arrest was the result of a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about child porn being uploaded to a website, according to a West Palm Beach Police Department report.

On June 16, investigators were able to verify that the images had been sent from a computer address assigned to Godbey, the affidavit said.

When police with a search warrant went to Godbey's home Wednesday they found a cellphone and laptop computer with more than 30 "images and videos of child pornography," according to an affidavit.

Godbey, 38, told investigators he owned the cellphone. The phone and laptop were found "hidden on the top of a kitchen cabinet," the report said.

Godbey was booked into the Palm Beach County jail Thursday evening.

During a court hearing Friday in West Palm Beach, there was no discussion of a monetary bond, but Judge Caroline Shepherd ordered a mental health evaluation for Godbey. She also ordered him not to have any contact with anyone under age 18.

Another court hearing for Godbey was scheduled for Wednesday.

Godbey, who is assigned to road patrol, was hired by the sheriff's office on June 27, 2013, according to agency spokeswoman Teri Barbera. He has been placed on administrative leave with pay, she said.

Barbera Friday released a statement on behalf of the sheriff's office:

"The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office holds its employees to the highest standards and never forgets about its duty to preserve the public's trust. Unfortunately sometimes an employee makes a bad decision which leads to misconduct. This misconduct was reported, investigated and determined to be criminal in nature, resulting in the charges."

In May 2015, Godbey was highlighted in a sheriff's office news release and social media posting for helping to save a kitten that had become trapped underneath a minivan in Belle Glade.
