PV solar shutter

Many of us don't have the money or the desire for major green renovations. So it's good to see smaller-scale ideas, maybe as a first step, such as the PV solar shutter from the San Diego company Plug 'n Save Energy Products. Small solar panels are installed on plantation shutter slats (new or retrofitted). On a sunny day, the shutters on a patio door can produce the energy to run a big-screen TV, computer and some small appliances, the company says. Ruth Curran, whose husband and son invented the product, says it costs $3,000 for shutters to cover a patio sliding glass door. www.plugnsaveenergyproducts.com -- Mary MacVean
