9. Phragmipedium manzurii, a newly discovered orchid

Phragmipedium manzurii, a.k.a. the discovery orchid Just last year, a man from Colombia sent Higgins and his team a photo of an unidentified orchid. Such a find is neat but not necessarily exciting — about 500 new orchid species are identified each year. But typically those new orchids are boring — small, green, no cool flower to speak of. This orchid was big, showy and pretty. A real coup!
