Police are investigating the shooting death of a Bay Area mother who was killed while trying to protect her young son and daughter from gunfire.

Chyemil Pierce, 30, was fatally shot and two others injured about 4:45 p.m. Monday when gunfire broke out in the Oakland neighborhood of 30th and Linden streets, Oakland police Officer Frank Bonifacio said.

Pierce had just picked up her children from daycare when a violent fight broke out.

As the shots rang out in front her home, Pierce rushed to protect her 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, yelling at them to run, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The woman’s children hid for cover and were not harmed.

Moments later, police arrived on scene and found Pierce, a human resource specialist at Kaiser Permanente, suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. She died outside her home.

Police have said little about the deadly shooting. A man and teen also were injured by gunfire.

Bonifacio said they found an Oakland boy suffering from several gunshot wounds in the area of the shooting. And a man with at least one gunshot wound was later dropped off at an area hospital.

Police are investigating the shooting and no arrests have been made, Bonifacio said.
