Rare summer rainfall sets a record in downtown L.A.
Downtown Los Angeles was sprinkled with a trace of rain on Thursday, forecasters said, but it was enough to set a record for the date.
By Thursday evening, 0.04 inches of rain had fallen downtown, breaking the previous record of 0.03 inches set in 1969, according to the National Weather Service.
It was a rare event, the agency said. Since 1877, downtown has received measurable amounts of rain on July 11 on just three occasions.
The temperature Thursday topped out at 76 degrees. A number of valley and mountain areas in the Los Angeles region recorded no rainfall and had temperatures in the low to mid-80s.
More sunshine and higher temperatures were expected on Friday, with even warmer weather expected over the weekend, the weather service said.
