Earthquakes shake southern Salton Sea area

A series of earthquakes between magnitude 2.5 and 3.6 shook the southern end of the Salton Sea overnight, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At least 10 temblors have hit the area near Niland since 9:15 p.m. Sunday. The largest, a 3.6-magnitude quake, shook about 5:38 a.m. Monday, according to the USGS.

The epicenters were clustered in the lake about nine miles from Niland and 17 miles from Brawley.

In the last 10 days, there have been six earthquakes magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
