A gunman was shot and wounded by police late Sunday at a gang party in South Los Angeles, police said.

Officers were in the area of 99th and Figueroa streets at 10:20 p.m. when they saw a large group of gang members gathered at a party outside a home, said Officer Norma Eisenman, a spokeswoman with the Los Angeles Police Department.

That's when the gunman fired at officers, she said. Officers returned fire and struck the man in the right shoulder, police told reporters at the scene.

During the shooting, partygoers dispersed and some tried to leave. But police detained several partygoers and talked to them. Police recovered a gun in the area, she said.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital. He is in stable condition.

No officers were reported injured.
