USC cracks down on fraternities after injury, alcohol incidents
Fraternities at USC will not be allowed to hold weekday parties and one fraternity was placed on probation after a student from Loyola Marymount University was injured at an event last week, university officials said.
The party at Sigma Alpha Epsilon was not registered with USC officials as required, university officials said, and it is unclear how the Loyola student got hurt. Still, the fraternity will not be allowed to hold events until the incident has been investigated by a campus committee.
Campus officials also said they would require Greek organizations to strictly follow campus policies that bar weekday parties. Any weekend events need to be registered and approved by administrators and the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Greek organizations had been allowed to self-govern to ensure compliance with USC rules, but “the university is requiring strict compliance with our social events policy for the rest of the semester,” said Ainsley Carry, USC’s vice provost for student affairs, in a statement.
Neon Tommy, a USC student-run news website, reported that eight people were taken to hospitals between Thursday and Sunday, including seven USC students for intoxication.
