High-speed crash kills driver, passenger in Huntington Beach
Two people were killed Monday after a driver lost control and smashed into a tree, splitting the car in two near a Huntington Beach intersection.
The car was traveling westbound on Ellis Avenue when the driver failed to navigate a left turn onto Main Street about 5:30 a.m., according to the Huntington Beach Police Department.
Aerial video footage showed the car had apparently hit a palm tree before splitting in two.
The driver and a passenger -- who were not immediately identified -- died at the scene, police said.
It was unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved, but police said the car had been traveling at a high rate of speed.
A SigAlert was issued while crews worked to clear the scene.
