Snowplow kills pregnant New York woman; baby in critical condition
A pregnant woman who was loading groceries into the trunk of her car in Brooklyn, N.Y., was hit and killed by a private snowplow, and her baby was delivered by caesarean section, New York police said Thursday.
Min Lin, 36, was struck by a snowplow moving in reverse in the parking lot of a market, police said. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Maimonides Medical Center.
The nearly full-term baby boy was in critical condition in the neonatal intensive care unit, a Maimonides spokeswoman told the Los Angeles Times. He weighs 6 pounds, 6 ounces, she said.
Lin’s death is the only storm-related fatality reported in the city Thursday, Lt. John Grimpel told The Times. New York and much of the East Coast are in the grip of a major winter storm.
The incident took place about 10:40 a.m. at the Fei Long Market, police said. Lin and her husband were loading groceries when she was hit. The husband was uninjured.
“Upon a further investigation, it was determined that the victim was in the rear parking lot of the above location when she was struck by a Bobcat, operated by a 42-year-old male, which was traveling in reverse upon plowing snow,” police said.
No charges have been filed. The unidentified driver of the plow remained at the scene and the investigation was continuing, police said.
