Carjacking -- A headline in Friday’s California section stated that a sport utility vehicle that collided with a car in Harbor City was stolen. The SUV was being driven by a carjacking suspect, but the stolen vehicle in the incident was an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. Police followed the SUV because they saw two men inside who fit the description of the carjacking suspects.

The incident began about 9:45 p.m. when police responded to a report that four armed men had carjacked an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme in the 1600 block of West Lomita Boulevard.

Officers searching the area saw two men who fit the description of the carjackers sitting in a sport utility vehicle in the 26000 block of South Vermont Avenue, police said.

The officers followed the two into a dead-end alley, where the men turned around and, according to police, drove toward one of the officers.

One officer fired, but apparently hit neither man, LAPD spokesman Horace Frank said.

The SUV went north on Vermont, where it crashed into the other car.

The SUV driver, Mario Magallon Jr., 22, was killed, and his passenger hospitalized.

Two people in the other car suffered injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.
