My Cousin Vinny? More like My Cousin Julianne.
Actress Marisa Tomei found out during a recent appearance on the TV show “Finding Your Roots” that she and fellow film star Julianne Moore are genetic cousins.
It was revealed on Tuesday’s episode of the genealogy program that Tomei shares an “identical stretch of DNA along her X-chromosome” with Moore.
“Oh, I can’t wait to tell her,” a visibly stunned Tomei says after learning of her connection to Moore.
Making the revelation even more intriguing, the show shares, is that Moore doesn’t have any known Italian ancestors, while each of Tomei’s ancestors had Italian roots.
Moore was also excited by the news, as she wrote on Instagram, “I KNEW WE WERE ALIKE! @marisatomei is my COUSIN!! OMG I’m so excited.”
Tomei, 54, and Moore, 58, both attended Boston University, with Tomei noting on the PBS show that they went to school together. They starred together in the 2011 romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”
The surprising episode comes a little over a year after “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David learned on “Finding Your Roots” that he is distant cousins with Bernie Sanders. Even before that revelation, David had portrayed Sanders on “Saturday Night Live.”
Tomei won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1993 for her performance in “My Cousin Vinny.” Moore, meanwhile, won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2015 for “Still Alice.”
