Free memory screenings offered

Florida Hospital Waterman Home Care Services, 3260 Waterman Way in Tavares, is offering free memory screenings from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Screenings consist of a series of questions and tasks and take 5-10 minutes.

The event is part of National Memory Screening Day, an annual initiative that the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

Library happenings


Eustis Memorial Library, 120 N. Center St., is offering the following free programs.

¿The Manga-Anime Club will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Nov. 20 . There will be a demonstration on origami — the ancient art of Japanese paper folding. Students in sixth grade or higher are welcome.

•Send some holiday cheer to the heroes in the military service this holiday season through the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Participants can create festive cards while enjoying hot cocoa and cookies from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 24. To sign up, call the library at 352-357-5686 or stop by the circulation desk.

•Children can stop by the library from Nov. 25 through Dec. 29 and look for Dewey the Library Elf. Participants can stop by the children's desk and tell the staff what Dewey was doing to receive a candy cane.

New Vision luncheon

New Vision for Independence, a nonprofit agency providing free instruction, vision rehabilitation and support services to visually impaired or blind adults and children and their families in Lake and Sumter counties, is hosting its ninth annual luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 9 in the Magnolia Room at Lake-Sumter Community College's Leesburg campus, 9501 U.S. Highway 441.

Christmas Room

Women for Hospice, fundraising organization for Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, is hosting its Christmas Room at the Hospice Hope Chest, 315 N. Donnelly St., Mount Dora.

The holiday-themed room is brimming with decorations, crafts, gift items and baked goods. The room is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Nov. 25.

There also is a Tree of Remembrance. For a donation, an angel ornament will be placed on the tree in memory of someone special to the donor.


The nonprofit resale shop also features upscale antiques, vintage and collectible items, quality furniture, china, silverware, decorative items, books and costume jewelry.

All proceeds from the store go to patient care at Cornerstone Hospice.

See's Candies

The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary is accepting pre-orders for See's Candies for the holidays by calling 352-259-2753 or 352-259-0209. The deadline is Friday .

The popular California-based candy maker is known for its chocolates and square lollipops, which are made with heavy cream, butter, natural vanilla, chocolate and Colombian coffee.

The auxiliary also will sell See's Candies from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 13 and 20 at Belk in La Plaza Grande, 1020 Bichara Blvd., Lady Lake.

All proceeds will benefit the hospital.

'Honorary Canine Mayor'

The Mount Dora Police Department, in partnership with the Mount Dora Heroes Foundation, invites Mount Dora locals to nominate their dogs as the "Honorary Canine Mayor of Mount Dora" through Tuesday.

The Canine Mayor will serve for a year and will receive an official collar, reserved parking at the city's dog park and gift card.

Dogs with a Mount Dora mailing address are eligible. The cost is $10 per nomination, and proceeds go to the Mount Dora Heroes Foundation in support of retired police K-9s.

Tax-Aide Program

The AARP Tax-Aide Program is seeking volunteers to assist seniors and low- to middle-income residents with preparing annual tax returns in Lake County. Positions also are available for greeters, manage computer equipment, etc.

Free training will be provided for individuals interested in becoming a Tax-Aide volunteer. Upon completion of training, participants will be expected to volunteer at least a one six-hour shift per week from Feb. 1 through April 15 at one of four sites in Lake County close to their home.

The program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service.
