Adelson donations to pro-Gingrich ‘super PAC’ total $16.5 million
Reporting from Washington — That “substantial donation” that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson reportedly made to the pro-Newt Gingrich “super PAC” Winning Our Future last month?
Pretty substantial, as it turns out.
The Las Vegas mogul and his wife put another $5 million into the super PAC in February, according to Federal Election Commission reports filed Tuesday. His daughter, Shelley Adelson, donated $500,000.
Altogether, the Adelson family has given Winning Our Future $16.5 million out of the $18.8 million it has raised.
In February, the super PAC raised only $235,549 outside of the Adelson donations. One of the other major donors was Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons, who contributed $100,000, the same amount he gave to the pro-Mitt Romney super PAC Restore Our Future last month.
Winning Our Future has worked to try to bolster Gingrich’s candidacy with ads that have sharply gone after Romney as out of touch. “Romney’s not the type to pump his own gas,” said a woman in one recent spot.
The super PAC has spent $16.2 million so far on independent expenditures, according to Federal Election Commission records compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.
