Gov. Jerry Brown appoints three to his Cabinet
Gov. Jerry Brown capped a massive, two-year reorganization of state government agencies on Tuesday by naming three new members of his Cabinet.
The secretaries of the three new agencies have been serving Brown in an interim capacity for months. They include Marybel Batjer, the new secretary of the Government Operations Agency; Brian Kelly, who will head the new state Transportation Agency and Anna Caballero the new Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency secretary.
All three will be subject to Senate confirmation after July 1, when the new government organization chart goes into effect.
Brown has proposed shuffling state departments since his first budget in January 2011. He has consolidated some agencies, eliminated others and reduced the number of Cabinet-level posts in his administration from 12 to 10.
“Currently, unrelated departments -- like Caltrans, the Department of Real Estate and the Department of Financial Institutions -- are housed together, while related programs are scattered throughout different agencies,” read a statement from Brown’s office released Tuesday. It claims Brown’s plan will “improve coordination and efficiency and make government more responsive to the public.”
