Under the loupe
Inglewood-based J.N. Shapiro Watches’ new timepiece, Resurgence, is made almost entirely in the U.S. The company, headed by founder Joshua Shapiro, has imbued the watch, which starts at $70,000, with elements that reference everything from Art Deco design to California sunshine. Here’s a look at some of the details of the Resurgence prototype.

Hands: The three hands draw inspiration from Art Deco design and require about 15 hours of meticulous, painstaking work to fabricate.
Numerals: The numerals’ typeface, which has been in use on Shapiro’s watches since 2019, was created by watch designer Lee Yuen-Rapati along with Shapiro and one of his clients.
Dial: The dial has four stepped layers of guilloché, each done in Shapiro’s trademark “infinity weave” pattern.
Case: Shapiro sourced the rose gold for the watch's case from a Commerce-based precious metals refiner, David H. Fell & Co., which his family has done business with since the 1970s.
Subdial: The subdial features a moiré pattern, whose wavy design Shapiro said is meant to evoke California sunshine.
