At least six people were killed and twenty others wounded in an attack by Al Shabab jihadist group against two passenger buses on a highway in northern Kenya, security sources said.

The buses, which were escorted by police, were shot with machine guns from both sides of Mandera road, on the border with Somalia.

Most deaths and injuries were among the passengers of the second bus which was in the middle of the ambush, while the first driver managed to speed away.

Attacks on buses have become a recurring action in this area of the country, where more than 50 people have been killed in similar ambushes.

Al Shabab has killed about 500 people in Kenya since April 2013, in retaliation for sending troops to Somalia to fight jihadists.

The terrorist group, which formally joined Al Qaeda in 2012, is fighting to impose a radical Islamic state in Somalia.
