Community: College support group installs officers
The Patrons Club of Glendale Community College began its new year with the installation of officers during a brunch last month at the Castaway restaurant.
Betty Musacco has served as president a couple times and is happily taking on another term. She accepted the gavel from Carolyn Payne, who is now first vice president.
Also on the board are Marianne Jennings, second vice president, bravely stepping in again as chairwoman of the annual fashion show; Geri Costello and Shirley Wright, third vice presidents; Judy Gorham, treasurer; Pat Beggs, recording secretary; and Margaret Hammond, corresponding secretary.
Gorham reported on the success of the fashion show held at the Castaway in November. The event raised about $23,000 that will go to scholarships and grants-in-aid programs to help students complete their educational goals whether it is to transfer to a four-year university or join the workforce.
Special guests attending were Supt./President David Viar and Dean of Student Affairs Paul Schlossman, who is the liaison between the college and the Patrons Club.
Viar distributed a student success scorecard for 2013 that gave highlights as to how Glendale Community College rates within the region, which has 12 community colleges in the L.A. area. There are 112 community colleges in California.
Out of the seven areas listed on the scorecard, Glendale Community College was first in the region for six of the areas and is generally in the top 10% in those areas for the state, he said.
An example was that the local college was first in the region and third in the state for its career development and college preparation rate. Another area cited was the “30 Unit Completion,” where students complete 30 units within six years of entry. Glendale Community College was first in the region and fourth in the state.
“You are a part of that success because of the work you do to raise money for the scholarship program you have in place and, for that, we say thank you very very much,” Viar said.
