Community: Panhellenic distributes funds and prepares for new year

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic has distributed its scholarships and installed officers for the upcoming year.

This Panhellenic chapter serves Glendale, Burbank, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Sunland and Tujunga. Members are from any of the 26 sororities recognized by the National Panhellenic Conference.

Established in 1947, the group’s charter is to support local women in pursuit of higher education.

Awards of varying amounts are given annually to eligible area high school senior women who are planning to attend a four-year college or university in the fall, as well as to eligible area college women who are active members in good standing with a National Panhellenic Conference sorority.

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic presents an annual benefit luncheon to raise money for the Merit Scholarship awards.

High School Merit Scholarship recipients for 2017 were Burbank High School graduates Rebecca Galvez, who will attend San Diego State University; Elina Hakobyan, who will attend USC; Emily Mintz-Kreyns, who will attend Columbia College of Chicago; and Sanam Patel, who will attend UC Berkeley.

Also receiving a Merit Scholarship was Julie McHorney, who graduated from John Burroughs High School and will attend CSU Channel Islands.

Glendale Panhellenic officers and volunteers are Kim Westhoff, president, Glendale, Alpha Omicron Pi; Elaine Chapman, vice president, La Cañada Flintridge, Kappa Kappa Gamma; Jerri Johnson, secretary, Pasadena, Sigma Sigma Sigma; Julie Weller, treasurer, Glendale, Delta Zeta; and Lynne Graves, benefit co-chair, La Cañada Flintridge, Alpha Delta Pi.

Also holding posts are Deb Ann Orfalea, scholarship social chair, Glendale, Zeta Tau Alpha; Janice Paul, scholarship chair, La Cañada Flintridge, Delta Delta Delta; and Georgine Archer, files/recommendations chair, Burbank, Delta Gamma.

New senior minister comes to SpiritWorks

Rev. Cliff Rubin has been appointed to serve as senior minister at SpiritWorks - Center for Spiritual Living.

Before this recent appointment, Rubin said he created and grew an online ministry called YANA (You Are Not Alone) Virtual Center for Spiritual Living that reached more than 2,000 people a week in more than 50 countries.

He also served as the executive director of the Listening Heart Crisis Center, which offered a suicide crisis hotline that he said took more than 10,000 calls during his tenure with a 100% survival rate.

“I live my life in the knowing that anything is possible and life is a celebration,” he said.

He is the author of “Cliff’s Notes on the Science of Mind Textbook,” used in Science of Mind classes and book study groups in more than 50 centers around the world.

SpiritWorks - Center for Spiritual Living was founded in 1949 and is located at 260 N. Pass Ave., Burbank.

Class of 1967 plans to reunite

Summer means it’s time for high school reunions and one of the big celebrations coming up is Burbank High School Class of 1967’s 50th reunion.

The three-day extravaganza will be held from Sept. 15 to 17. The main event will be a dinner on Sept. 16 at the Burbank Elks Lodge, 2232 N. Hollywood Way, Burbank.

Cost to attend the dinner and Sunday picnic is $67. The memory book is $25.
