Las Candelas plans biennial fashion show

Members of the Glendale-based nonprofit organization Las Candelas celebrated their annual summer gathering at El Portal in Pasadena on Sept. 12 after a three-month break from their programs. Honored that evening was Bobbi Gangi, who will begin her second term as president of Las Candelas in October.

The purpose of the organization is to provide volunteer service for emotionally disturbed children. Funds to support their services are raised through their biennial Fashion Show Luncheon. The event is planned for Feb. 28 at the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Hotel, and the theme chosen by chairwomen Ellyn Semler and Dianne Endsley is “Reach for the Stars.”

The summer gathering was organized by social chairwoman Shirley Johnstone and assistant Roberta Raffaelli. A crowd of 50 gathered on the patio of El Portal Restaurant for a “margaritas and taquitos” reception complete with strolling Mexican musicians before sitting down together for a feast of tacos, enchiladas and chile rellenos. The highlight of the evening was introducing the 2010-11 Las Candelas Provisionals Sharon Anderson, Ginny Simpson and Harriet Rector, all Glendale residents.

Others attending the celebration were members Valery Moorhead, Sally Perkins, Karen Whyte, Diane Russell, Marilyn Olson, Mary Lane, Cathy Keen, Debbie Hinckley, Jeannie Flint-Werbelow, Endsley, Liz Reynolds, Ann Jones, Mary Lane, Joan Anderson, Anna Brewer, Fran Buchanan, Marian Corbett and Marilyn Butler, along with Associate Members Mary Barber, Ruth Barrone, Sharon Gregg, Shirley Darling and Ann Ways. Also attending were members’ husbands and guests.

Founded in 1953, the mission of Las Candelas is to provide volunteer service to emotionally disturbed children and to promote better understanding of mental health. Las Candelas brings monthly programs to the children at Hathaway-Sycamores in Altadena and Hillsides in Pasadena and also provides support for the Glen Roberts Child Study Center in Glendale.
