Aktion Club installs officers
The Burbank Kiwanis For Fun held a dinner party on May 12 at Victorio’s Restaurant to celebrate the installation of new officers of the Kiwanis Aktion Club for the 2011-13 period.
Kiwanis Division 16 Lt. Gov. Gary Kessler installed the incoming officers: President Sandy Saenz, Vice President Chris Kulp, Secretary Ricky Hernandez and Treasurer Alberto Herrera. A recognition of the outgoing officers was held with outgoing President Karen Young giving a wonderful thank-you speech. She reminded everybody that they will be hosting a fashion show in August to benefit the “Appearance Room” at the Roy and Patricia Disney Cancer Center.
Saenz delivered her acceptance speech with great aplomb. She, like all the other members, has become used to speaking to large groups without blinking. The incoming officers received corsages, and they were very elegant. The Aktion Club’s membership is made up of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Kiwanian Paula Moody decorated the room with balloons and American flags, so it was bright and beautiful. All the members received certificates or recognition for a job well done. The club also received Certificates of Appreciation and Recognition from U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), Assemblyman Mike Gatto and Burbank City Council. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by all.

BURBANK NOON LIONS SUPPORTING ALL AGES
The families staying in Ronald McDonald House, Los Angeles, benefited from a pizza dinner hosted by the Burbank Noon Lions; patients at a local convalescent center received a gift along with a little cheer provided by visiting Lions; and Burbank children under the age of 5 received free eye screenings when club members participated in the Burbank YMCA Healthy Kids Day event. The eye screening project, KidSight Burbank, focuses on children 5 and under to detect eye problems that can delay development, learning, balance, coordination and speech.
Statistics show that 70% of juvenile delinquents have vision issues and 70% of school-age children, who have a learning disability, have some form of vision impairment. The sooner vision problems are identified in young children, the easier they are to resolve and correct. In support of KidSight Burbank, the Burbank Noon Lions Club wants all parents of babies to be aware of the guidelines for normal visual behavior in infants.
These guidelines clearly explain what behaviors you should expect from a baby from birth through the first 12 months of his/her life. If children do not appear to be following these development markers, it is strongly recommended that a pediatrician and/or pediatric ophthalmologist be contacted as soon as possible. KidSight Burbank free screenings can be scheduled for any public or private licensed child care facility in the city.

KIWANIS FLAG DAY
The Burbank Kiwanis Club asked Burbank residents to join with Americans across the country in pledging allegiance to our nation’s flag on Tuesday. This concluded the 15th annual “Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance” program that took place on the championship court of the Burbank Tennis Center in McCambridge Park. The Burbank Community Band presented a concert of patriotic music that was followed by awards to the winners of patriotic art and photo contests conducted in the parochial and public schools of Burbank this year. Members of Kiwanis-sponsored Boy Scout Troop 204 performed its historic flag ceremony that depicts the changes in our flag over the years. To conclude the program, the audience was asked to join in singing the national anthem.
Our deepest sympathy to Burbank Kiwanis Club President Cynthia Faust on the June 9 death of her beloved husband Sherman Spiegel. A memorial service was held for him June 18 at the Old North Church in Forest Lawn.
