Students honored for public service

BURBANK -- Five local school students were honored Friday for their
public service work at the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, as part
of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards celebration.
The award program is based solely on volunteerism and students are
selected based on their history of community involvement.
David Hoffman of Burbank High School of was selected for his work for
his church’s outreach program; John Speirs of Burbank High, for
volunteering at the Burbank Animal Shelter; Jennifer Avila of John
Burroughs High School, for her work as a docent at the Burbank Historical
Society; Dilhara Fernando of John Burroughs High School, for her work at
the Hope for the Homeless Youth at the Dream Center in L.A.; and Matt
Fritz of David Starr Jordan Middle School, for his work at the Autry
Museum of Western Heritage.
