The La Canada High boys’ basketball team couldn’t omit Burroughs

from its mind throughout July.

Though coaches won’t admit to it, some games leave a lasting

impression that might border on revenge should the squads meet again.

It might also turn up an offense a notch.

La Canada exacted revenge and made more than half of its shots in

the third quarter Monday to record a 68-41 victory against Burroughs

in a Glendale High Summer League contest.

The Spartans (29-14) turned the tide on Burroughs (18-10).

Burroughs handed La Canada a 54-43 loss in another summer league game

July 3.

The Spartans have relied exclusively on one dominant shooting

quarter to extinguish its opponents and used a 27-4 run in the third

quarter to finish Burroughs.

“We’ve done that all summer where everything has gone right for us

shooting in a quarter,” La Canada Coach Tom Hofman said.

“It was probably in our mind that Burroughs beat us the first time

and they played hard. We seemed to be sleepwalking in the first

quarter [tonight].”

Hofman absolved Umar Khan from the list of sleepwalkers.

Khan gave the Spartans an opportunity to overcome their rustiness

and scored seven first-quarter points.

Khan’s transition and offensive aggressiveness ignited the

Spartans in the third quarter. La Canada’s shooting heated up and

left Burroughs dumbfounded.

“Can’t stop shooting like that,” Burroughs Coach Art Sullivan

said. “They set some good screens and didn’t miss their shots. We

just fell apart and they had too many possessions.

“La Canada didn’t shoot the ball well the last game and we took

advantage of that. We got impatient tonight and went into a drought.

That’s part about being young and we have only one senior.”

Peter St. Hubert is the lone senior for Burroughs. St. Hubert

displayed flashes of offensive domination in the first quarter, which

helped Burroughs build a 15-12 lead.

St. Hubert recorded seven first-quarter points. Teammate Robin

Mohammed added 10 first-half points.
