Woman killed, sister injured in hit-and-run; Van Nuys man arrested

A driver is facing a murder charge after crashing into two women standing at the side of a road in Van Nuys and fleeing the scene, police said Monday.

The suspect, Alfonso Garnica-Mozgueda, 33, lost control of his Lexus on Erwin Street just west of Vesper about 9:25 p.m. Sunday and crashed into the women, who were standing next to a truck, police said. The 7-week-old daughter of one of the victims was inside the truck.

Christina Lynn Ruvalcaba, 39, suffered major injuries and died at the hospital shortly after the crash. Her sister, 34-year-old Blanca Ruvalcaba, was thrown several feet, landing on the sidewalk, and was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Her baby in the truck was unhurt.
