Villaraigosa to wed Burbank Prop. 8 plaintiffs after court lifts gay marriage ban
Burbank residents Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo – plaintiffs who helped take Proposition 8 all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court – are slated to be married by outgoing Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa this evening.
The announcement came shortly after a federal appeals court opened the way for same-sex weddings to resume in California.
Katami and Zarillo, together with a lesbian couple from Berkeley, were plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 case that was decided by the Supreme Court earlier this week.
Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, of Berkeley, were to be married in San Francisco by California Atty. Gen. Kamala D. Harris.
The Los Angeles County Clerk-Recorder said Friday that it would resume issuing marriage licenses for same-sex weddings as soon as it received official word from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
The court lifted its stay on an injunction that ordered state officials to stop enforcing California’s Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage. With the court’s action, counties can now begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses.
