Update: Grease fire shuts down lanes on northbound 5 Freeway

The big rig that caught on fire on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway was carrying kitchen grease, which was starting to spill in the roadway on Wednesday afternoon, according to CHP’s online log.

Caltrans and the Burbank Fire Department reported to the scene to help clean up. As of 3:02 p.m., one freeway lane, along with the Lincoln Street off-ramp, remained closed.

A Sigalert was issued Wednesday afternoon after a big rig caught fire on the 5 freeway near Lincoln Street in Burbank, authorities said.

Two lanes on the freeway were initially closed at 2:21 p.m. after the truck, which was hauling restaurant ingredients, caught fire, said California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi.

There’s no indication the truck was in a collision.

Fire crews were reporting to the scene to extinguish the blaze and tow the truck, though it was unknown how long the lanes were expected to be closed.

It was unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.
