Shank captures event at meet
TRACK AND FIELD
Burroughs in California Relays: Indians’ Justice Shank won the girls’ high jump with a 5-feet-2 effort Saturday in the event at Cerritos College.
Shannon Kermah also had a fine effort in the girls’ triple jump, placing fourth with in 35-11 3/4. The effort put her at No. 3 on the Burroughs all-time list. Kermah also finished fourth in the long jump (16-4 3/4).
Also on the girls’ side, Paris Vaughn finished eighth in the long jump (15-7 3/4).
On the boys’ side, Brandon Andrade was third in the 800 (2:02.27) and Anthony Monroy was third in the 3,200 (9:20.22).
SOFTBALL
Burbank in High Desert Classic: The Bulldogs lost to some tough teams in the event that ended Monday.
Last week, Burbank (1-6) was defeated by Harvard Westlake, 4-2, and was beaten by host Lancaster, 5-4.
Against Harvard-Westlake, Katie Hooper hit a home run and Sarah Riojas had a hit. In the circle, pitcher Crystal Diaz had seven strikeouts.
Against Lancaster, Laina Do was two for four with a run batted in, Katie Hooper was two for four with an RBI and Tiffany Pisa was two for three with a run scored.
Pitcher Ashley Russo had six strikeouts.
BASEBALL
Oakwood 11, Providence 0: Pioneers’ Anthony Galvan struck out nine in four innings in the Liberty League loss Friday at East Valley Park.
Galvan also had a triple for Providence (0-4).
Burbank in Tucson Conquistador Lancer Baseball Classic: The Bulldogs fell to Sunnyside (Ariz.), 5-4, Friday in the final game of the tournament in Arizona.
Burbank came out strongly and scored the first four runs of the game, highlighted by a Paul Frias home run that sailed 408 feet over the left-centerfield wall. Frias also tripled in the game and stole home to give the Bulldogs their second run of the contest.
The Bulldogs outhit Sunnyside, 10-8, with Dylan Mersola picking up two hits, including a triple. Chris Okimoto also had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run, Ryan Favor had two hits and James Johnson and John White had hits.
Burroughs in Tucson Conquistador Lancer Baseball Classic: Christian Garia, Ryne Kahikina, Chris Peale and Shaun Bradshaw were named to the all-tournament team for Burroughs, which was the runner-up in the event.
The Indians played well in the tournament, going 4-1-1 and ending with a team batting average of 425.
Burroughs ended the tournament Friday with a 13-3 loss to Canyon del Oro of Tucson in the championship game. Kahikina was two for three, Garia was two for three and Ryan Gordon had a hit and four runs batted in.
In a game against Catalina Foothills of Tucson on Thursday, Burroughs won, 10-3. Gordon had a big game, going two for four with a home run and five RBI.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Providence d. Desert Christian, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18: The Pioneers improved to 4-3 with a nonleague victory Friday at home.
Chris Galvez and David Nardoni played well for Providence.
