BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Downey Calvary Chapel, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18: Playing what Coach Josh Eggleston called “probably our best match of the year,” the Pioneers rolled to a second-round win in the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Thursday at home.

The win puts No. 4-seeded Providence (16-6) into the quarterfinals. It will take on host Pasadena Poly (15-7) at 2 p.m. today. Pasadena Poly is the No. 2 team from the Prep League.

“We were just hitting on all cylinders,” Eggleston said of Thursday’s win. “We started out very well and we were able to keep the pressure on.”

Chester Bosworth led the Pioneers — the runner-up from the Liberty League — with 10 kills and five blocks.

Eggleston said the Pioneers played much better against Calvary Chapel on Thursday than they did in their playoff opener Tuesday, in which they had to fight for a five-game win against St. Bernard.

“It was like night and day Thursday,” he said.
