Providence softball players earn all-league accolades
Bits and pieces from the local sports scene:
Providence trio garners all-league honors: Three softball players from Providence High earned first-team All-Liberty League honors.
Senior infielder Jackie Brewer, senior utility player Gian-Mari Llaguno and senior pitcher Caitie Guttry were all honored for a Pioneers team that went 8-10-1 and 4-2 in the Liberty League for a second-place finish.
Providence had a chance to earn a share of the league championship up until the final day of the regular season. However, the Pioneers were defeated by champion Viewpoint, 9-1.
In the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division VII playoffs, Providence fell to No. 2 Faith Baptist, 16-0.
Brewer was a potent hitter for the Pioneers. Along with a .419 average (26 for 62), she also drove in 40 runs, scored 30 runs, had five home runs and two triples. In addition, Brewer had a .726 slugging percentage and a .479 on-base percentage.
Llaguno paced the team with a .455 average (25 for 55) and also tallied 22 RBI, scored 23 runs, had a .483 OBP and struck out just three times.
Guttry, who battled back from an injury, hit .381 (16 for 42) and had 15 RBI. In the circle, she was 6-6 with a 1.72 earned-run average and 89 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings.
Tubert unable to make final cut: University of Arkansas junior-to-be Emily Tubert fired a second round even-par 71 Saturday at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark.
However, the Burroughs High graduate did not make the cut for Sunday’s final round. Tubert was playing on a sponsor’s exemption for the second consecutive year and headed into the clubhouse with a 144.
Tubert opened play in the morning flight from the 10th hole and made seven consecutive pars to start her day.
In several cases throughout the round, Tubert hit the ball well off the tee but her putter just wasn’t as sharp as the Razorback would have liked.
“Today, shooting even was hard,” Tubert said on Arkansas website. “I hit the ball so well [Saturday] but I could not make a putt. The first three holes, I missed three putts inside eight feet. You can’t do that and play against the world’s best players. It’s interesting; this is really just another tournament. This experience tells me that I belong and that I can do this.”
On her fifth hole of the day (No. 14), Tubert launched a shot over the fountain and it hit within a foot of the pin. The ball spun back leaving her with a six-footer. She two-putted for a par.
Tubert moved across the street to the island green on the 16th hole and placed a perfect tee shot within two feet of the pin, but her birdie putt lipped out and she again saved par.
Tubert turned one-under and stayed that way until a bit of trouble on the second nine. She would bogey three of the next four holes, with a birdie mixed in, moving to one-over with four holes to play.
She posted back-to-back bogeys on the second and third holes (her 11th and 12th) of the round.
Tubert moved on to her 12th hole and struck her tee shot well as it sailed right of the pin on the par three. She had to jump a bunker and didn’t get the roll she was hoping for as she moved to one-over.
The wind and heat became factors in the second nine, but Tubert made the most of it on the par four No. 4 hole. Her second shot lifted over the pin but the back spin carried it back and it almost dropped for the eagle. Instead, she made the short putt for birdie.
But Tubert gave it right back on the 14th hole of the round with a bogey on No. 5. She mishit a wedge and couldn’t get the par putt to fall.
Her score would hold until the 16th when she made a birdie to move her back to even where she would finish.
Burroughs struggles, but gains experience: The Burroughs High girls’ basketball team didn’t win any games in the Norco Tournament, but the Indians gained valuable experience against some tough teams.
The Indians were playing without three of their key players.
In the opener, Burroughs fell to Long Beach Millikan, 33-26. Sidney Ortega had 12 points and four rebounds and Delaney Nicol had eight points.
Brea Olinda than handed the Indians a 42-34 loss. Nicol had six points and three steals, Brooke Radcliff had six points and seven rebounds, Abbey Ibarra had six points and Alondra Ramirez added five.
In a 51-28 loss to Horizon of San Diego, Nicol had seven points and Ortega added five.
In the final game, host Norco defeated Burroughs, 31-21. Nicol and Ramirez had five points each.
The Indians also struggled in the Saugus Tournament recently, going 1-4 against some stiff competition.
The team’s only win came against Hart, 56-25, thanks to a big effort from Aysia Shellmire, who had 21 points to go along with six steals. Radcliff added eight points and Molly Holt had seven points and four steals.
