BELL-JEFF VS. SALESIAN

WHEN: 7 p.m. today.

WHERE: Memorial Field (Burroughs High).

RECORDS: The Guards are 2-4, 0-0 in the Santa Cruz League; the Mustangs are 5-1, 1-0.

LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to Malibu, 58-40; Salesian defeated St. Anthony, 48-21.

OUTLOOK: All indications point to a tough league opener for the Guards. Salesian is ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Southeast Division. In addition, the Mustangs’ only loss was a 48-34 setback to Los Altos. The team has a star in senior wide receiver/defensive back Jermaine Kelly, who has committed to UCLA. Salesian also possesses a fine quarterback in senior Jihad Vercher, who is a threat on the ground as well as through the air. Bell-Jeff’s starting quarterback, sophomore Johnathan Porter, is questionable for the game after dislocating his hand last week in the loss to Malibu. If Porter can’t go, the Guards have a capable signal-caller in senior Mitch Kellogg. Salesian will likely be looking for a way to stop Guards’ senior running back Josh Martinez, who has 10 rushing touchdowns.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Guards and Mustangs are first and second, respectively, in points per game in the league, as Bell-Jeff averages 39.8 and Salesian averages 39.7.
