Roundup: Providence volleyball notches league win

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Archer, 15-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 17-15: The Pioneers won their second straight Liberty League match to begin the campaign on Monday.

Jennifer Nardoni had 21 assists and 21 digs to pace Providence (8-3, 2-0 in league).

Lorena Ubillus tallied 10 kills and Olivia Menke added nine for the Pioneers.

Bellarmine-Jefferson d. St. Genevieve, 25-11, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22: The Guards improved to 7-2, 2-1 in the Santa Cruz League with a win Thursday at home.

Amanda Maalouf had 26 assists and four aces, Briana Hillo had 15 kills and 13 digs, Liz Fundora had 13 kills and 15 digs and Sam Cesarez had 29 digs for Bell-Jeff.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Burbank 18, Pasadena 0: The Bulldogs stayed in a tie for first place in the Pacific League with a victory Tuesday at home.

Burbank is 12-2, 9-1 and ranked No. 5 in the latest CIF Southern Section Division II poll.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs in Santa Clarita Valley Invitational: The Indians varsity boys’ team placed sixth and the girls were 20th in the event Saturday at Castaic Lake.

On the boys’ side, Burroughs received scoring efforts from Shane Thompson (13th; 15 minutes, 49 seconds), Garrett Boulais (15th; 15:58), Elias Hoxsie (17th; 16:02), Chris Van Dam (73rd; 16:51) and Everth Vargas (76th; 16:53).

On the girls’ side, scorers were Dayanna Yanez (89th; 21:40), Deanna Fierro (106th; 22:19), Brianna Maya (108th; 22:22), Maddy Davis (115th; 22:33) and Laura Rodriguez (135th; 22:54).

Burroughs did have a team champion in the boys’ sophomore-freshman race, as all the squad’s runners finished in the fourth through eighth spots. The scorers were Adam Villalpando (fourth; 16:45), Justin Villagran (fifth; 16:46), Manne Green (sixth; 17:01), Timothy Wells (seventh; 17:07) and Matt Cardenas (eighth; 17:09).

In the junior varsity girls’ race Burroughs placed sixth behind Molly Stapelfeldt (second; 19:59), Heidi Eligio (31st; 21:40), Rainy Diforte (50th; 22:13) Megan Navas (108th; 23:38) and Cathy Enciso (126th; 24:08).

Taking part in the boys’ junior varsity race were Jack Howe (10th; 17:31), David Carrillo (11th; 17:32), Greg Kern (28th; 17:58) and Carvin Ortega (34th; 17:59).

FOOTBALL

Burbank Vikings: No team has been able to derail the youth tackle program’s Junior Green squad this season.

The Junior Green increased its record to 7-0 with a 50-0 victory Saturday against Canyon Green.

Also staying undefeated was Midget Green (6-0), which earned a 42-6 victory against the Valley Bengals, and the Wee-Wees (6-0), which upended Canyon Green, 30-6.

Another Burbank team which notched a win was Bantam White (4-2), which defeated Oxnard, 34-16.

Suffering losses were Senior Green (0-6) against the Santa Clarita Warriors, 55-0, Bantam Black (2-4) against the Simi Valley Patriots, 36-0, and the Gremlins (1-5) against Camarillo, 22-6.
