Burroughs volleyball wins first game but falls in four in CIF opener

Burroughs High girls’ volleyball Coach Edwin Real was happy with the way his team played early on Tuesday in its CIF Southern Section playoff game.

Despite having to travel to Paul Springs for their Division II-A contest, the Indians jumped right in and won the first game. The team was hoping to ride that early success to a win in the opening round.

Unfortunately, Burroughs couldn’t keep up the momentum, as it lost the next three and suffered a 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 loss.

“We played well in that opening game,” Real said. “We looked good and I thought we were on our way. But they had a pretty good outside hitter and that created some problems for us. I thought that were pretty evenly matched.”

The loss ends the season for the Indians (18-10), who tied for second place in the Pacific League and went into the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from the league. Last season, Burroughs advanced to the quarterfinals in the division.”

Palm Springs (15-2) won a championship in the Desert Valley League.

“It’s not that we played badly against them,” Real said. “We had a lead in that second game and we even had a lead in the third game. But we just weren’t able to keep those leads and we ended up losing the game.

“I was very happy with the way Lexi [Hamilton] played.”
