Roundup: Providence baseball starts season 2-0
BASEBALL
Providence 17, Wildwood 6: Behind an 18-hit attack, the Pioneers improved their record to 2-0 with a nonleague victory Thursday night at Foy Park.
Sophomore Sean Holt led the offense with a four-for-five performance, including two doubles and three runs batted in. Holt also recorded the win on the mound with nine strikeouts in four innings.
Thomas Keller, Mason Inumerable and Harrison Pyros had three hits each.
The victory marks the first time in more than a decade the Pioneers have opened a season 2-0.
Saugus 7. Burroughs 0: The Centurions received a complete-game three-hitter from pitcher Chase Wheatcroft to turn back the host Indians in a nonleague game Thursday.
Aidan Anding, Max Haddad and Cameron Rodriguez had hits for Burroughs (0-2).
Loyola 15, Burbank 3: The Bulldogs evened their record at 1-1 with a nonleague loss Thursday against the Cubs at home.
Providence 10, Fairmont 1: The Pioneers opened their season in fine fashion Tuesday by notching a nonleague win at Brookhurst Park in Anaheim.
Thomas Keller pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts in seven innings, allowing only three singles and one unearned run.
Mason Inumerable led the offense with a two-for-four performance with one run batted in and two runs scored. Dante Cano and Marco Angrisani each had two RBI.
SOFTBALL
Providence 16, Holy Family 2: The Pioneers belted 10 hits in earning the win in their season opener Tuesday at Olive Park.
Fabi Jimenez went three for five for Providence. In the circle, Sierra Nelson surrendered just one earned run, struck out seven and walked two to pick up the win.
BOYS’ GOLF
La Cañada 182, San Marino 209, Burroughs 207: The Indians finished third in the nonleague match Thursday at the La Cañada Country Club.
Burroughs was paced by Sivakorn Losakul, who shot a 37. The Indians also received 41s from Louis D’Aquila and Dylan McNeely, a 42 from Tnick Trivimol and Patrick Smith and Patrick Colbert shot 46s.
La Cañada 196, San Marino 209, Burroughs 230: The Indians were paced by a 43 from Daniel Kesicbasian in Tuesday’s nonleague match at De Bell Golf Club.
The other Burroughs scorers were Patrick Colbert (44), Tnick Trivimol (45), Dylan McNeely (48) and Sivakorn Losakul (50).
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Providence in Providence Tournament: The Pioneers fell to Desert Christian, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13, and lost to St. Monica, 25-23, 25-22, Friday in their own event.
Burbank d. Canyon Country Canyon, 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20: The Bulldogs won their second straight match to open the season on Thursday.
Joseph Servin had 12 kills, Justin Saisirikul had eight kills, Willie Perryman added seven kills and Peter Jang had 23 assists for Burbank (2-0).
Burroughs d. Palos Verdes, 26-24, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22: The Indians opened their season with a win at home against the Division I Sea Kings on Tuesday.
Nick Van Loo led Burroughs with 16 kills and three blocks. Tristan Martin chipped in with 10 kills, Ryan Van Loo had 36 assists and Danny Casillas had six digs.
The Indians are ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division II.
BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Burbank 71, Valencia 65: The Bulldogs had double winners in Andy Hurtado and Jonathan Afzali to pace the team to a nonleague win in its season opener Thursday.
Hurtado took the shot put in 43 feet 7 1/2 inches and the discus in 152-6 and Afzali won the 110-meter high hurdles (15.97 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (43.41). Also winning events for the Bulldogs were Gabriel Ellman in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 34.4 seconds), Chris Miranda in the pole vault (13-6) and James Williams in the long jump (20-8 1/2).
Canyon Country Canyon 104, Burroughs 32: Matt Schwartz won the pole vault (14 feet), Robert Martinez took the 400 meters (51.2 seconds) and Tommy Howe was first in the shot put (39-7) in the Indians’ nonleague loss Thursday to open their season.
GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD
Burbank 74, Valencia 62: The Bulldogs had five individual winners in the nonleague victory Thursday that opened their season.
Canyon Country Canyon 102, Burroughs 34: The Indians received first-place finishes from Ariana Leonardo in the 100-meter hurdles (17.9 seconds) and Ashley Sapone in the discus (81 feet 2 inches) in the nonleague loss Thursday to open their season.
