With one swing, Burbank High softball sophomore Julia Duarte plated two runs, led the Bulldogs to a 5-4 win over West Ranch and bestowed her team with the High Desert Classic tournament championship Saturday.

Duarte hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel Burbank to the tournament title in Lancaster.

Burbank earned passage into the title game on the heels of a 1-0 nine-inning semifinal win over Highland in which junior Caitlyn Brooks, the reigning All-Area Softball Player of the Year, threw a shutout and struck out 16. Amber Ingram scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Brooks was named the tournament most valuable player, while Duarte, junior Jazmin Orozco and junior Bridgette Pisa garnered spots on the all-tournament team.

The Bulldogs, who had lost to West Ranch earlier in the tournament, are now 5-3.
