Burroughs sweeps swin meet against Burbank
BURBANK — What’s the Burbank High-Burroughs rivalry without some drama and a little bit of controversy?
Tuesday’s Pacific League swimming meet between the Bulldogs and Indians featured both — in a single event.
With the score close in the boys’ competition headed into the final event of the day, the 4x100-yard freestyle relay, the meet victory looked up for grabs. Although Burroughs won the relay race, the team was disqualified after it was detected that one of its swimmers was wearing a double cap, which is a violation.
As a result, the Bulldogs were awarded the win in the event, which helped them pull out a 78-77 victory. However, on Wednesday, it was determined that wearing a double cap is not a violation, the disqualification was overturned and the win was given to the Indians.
In the girls’ portion of the meet, Burroughs was able to earn a 93-79 victory.
“It is kind of a crazy way to win,” Burbank Coach Jarrod Przebieda said of the boys’ result. “A swimmer who has a double cap has a distinct advantage, so that’s why it’s not allowed.
“But I was really happy with the performances from our swimmers all around. They have been working hard all season and a meet like this just shows how much work they’ve put in.”
Burroughs Coach Jacob Cook said the disqualification in the final event was unfortunate.
“I don’t even have the words to describe what I feel about that,” he said. “It is just an unfortunate thing and I guess that’s just how it goes.”
On the boys’ side for the Indians, they received a fine effort from Dexter Brown. Brown, who set a school record in the 100 freestyle earlier in the season, won the event against the Bulldogs in 49.84 seconds. He also teamed up with Ryan Donahoe, Cesar Marinero and Brian Beckman to take the 200 freestyle relay and teamed up with Derrick Duran, Donahoe and Beckman to take the 400 freestyle relay (3:30.73).
For the Bulldogs, Pablo Edgar was a double-winner, taking the 100 freestyle in 52.60 and the 50 freestyle in 24.08. Also winning events were Derek Baer in the 500 freestyle (5:25.63), Brandon Alger in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.28) and Roman Rustomyan in the 100 backstroke (1:05.60).
The Burroughs girls’ team was paced by its 200 freestyle relay team of Sara Jung, Kyra Helfrich, Hanna Jung and Cami Christopher, which won in 1:50.69. For Burbank, Anais Hacobian won the 50 freestyle (27.08) and Beem Mingcharoenwong won the 200 individual medley (2:34.50).
