Share

Cyclists will ride through Laguna Beach Sunday to look and learn about backyard chicken coops in the third annual Tour de Coop.

Check-in for the free, self-guided tour begins at 9 a.m. at 487 Shadow Lane., where participants will receive a map of coop locations. Attendees will then learn about keeping backyard chickens during an information session at 9:30 a.m. before beginning the ride at 10 a.m.

Local businesses and nonprofits are stepping up to make the event possible.

Laguna Cyclery will provide discounted bike rentals and tune-ups for riders, while Laguna Coffee and Whole Foods will supply complementary refreshments for cyclists at check-in. Transition Laguna Beach, an organization dedicated to installing gardens and fostering water conservation, will also offer a guided tour leaving from Shadow Lane at 10 a.m.

“This is not just about the joy of raising backyard chickens, it is also about bringing the community together and educating them about living a sustainable lifestyle in an urban setting,” according to a news release.

Laguna Beach resident Reem Khalil Bell created the event after a conversation with neighbor Kerry Bowers about ways to bring the community together around chicken coops.
