‘Phantom of the Opera’ to haunt Segerstrom stage for a short summertime run

“Phantom of the Opera” will drop into Segerstrom Center for the Arts for a limited three-week run Thursday through Aug. 30.
Inspired by the Gothic horror novel by French author Gaston Leroux, the Andrew Lloyd Webber production is technically not an opera but one of the most popular modern musicals.
Known for its haunting score and dramatic chandelier drop, the work has toured 217 cities and been performed in 23 languages since its 1988 debut.
The revitalized production, presented by Cameron Mackintosh and featuring Maria Björnson’s original design, is based on the direction of Harold Prince with musical staging and choreography by Gillian Lynne.
The story follows soprano Christine Daaé, whose voice captures the attention of a masked figure haunting the Paris Opera House where she performs. The two become intertwined, creating a love triangle among Christine, the Phantom and Christine’s beau, Raoul.
Audiences can expect to hear the production’s iconic title song, as well other well-known originals, including, “The Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” and “Masquerade.”
A free Q&A with the cast and company will follow the Aug. 13, Aug. 20 and Aug. 27 performances.
In addition, Segerstrom is partnering with the Friendly Center as part of its “Broadway Donation Drive.”
The theater will collect hygiene products, including shampoo, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes and feminine products, for the Orange County nonprofit throughout Phantom’s run.
“Phantom of the Opera” is on stage from Aug. 12-30 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, 600 Town Center Drive, Costa Mesa. Tickets, which start at $74, are available at scfta.org.
