Canstruction Orange County

Boat Fest

The third annual Wooden Boat Festival is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Legion Post 291 Yacht Club, 215 E. 15th St., Newport Beach. Tickets cost $10 and include boat shuttle service to the tall ship Irving Johnson, which will be open to the public at the Lido Marina Village docks.

Meet the Mayor

Newport Beach Mayor Mike Henn will visit a firehouse in Santa Ana Heights from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The event at Fire Station No. 7, 20401 Acacia St., will be open to the community and people are invited to come by to have coffee and chat with Henn about city issues.

Green Thumbs Workshop

The Orange County Great Park holds the first of its free programs in its 2011 Fall Garden Workshops series. Workshop begins at 11 a.m. in the park’s Farm & Food Lab. Ocean Swim

The Swim for Life Foundation holds its ninth annual ocean swim at Corona del Mar’s main beach to promote water safety. Olympians Janet Evans, Jason Lezak and others are expected to come out to show their support for the 1-mile swim. Proceeds go toward the Tustin-based foundation’s “Safer 3” program promoting water safety. There is a $30 entry fee for swimmers 18 and older and $15 for swimmers younger than 18. Early California Days

Costa Mesa Historical Society hosts an educational event, “Early California Days,” from noon to 4 p.m. at the Diego Sepulveda Adobe in Estancia Park, 1900 Adams Ave., Costa Mesa. At 1 p.m., Paul Apodaca, an expert in California history from Chapman University, will talk about Pre-Mission Period Indians. Great Race

A tall ship race between the Irving Johnson and the Exy Johnson, manned by crews from the Bahia Corinthian and Balboa Yacht Clubs, takes place in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach waters starting at 1 p.m. Viewing spots include Balboa Pier, where the race will start and finish, and the Newport and Huntington Beach piers.
