Mother and son arrested in shooting near Costa Mesa grocery store

Costa Mesa police have arrested a woman and her son in connection with a Tuesday morning shooting that left a man critically wounded outside of a grocery store in the 2100 block of Newport Boulevard.

The shooting took place shortly after 7:30 a.m. in or near the Stater Bros. parking lot, according to a Costa Mesa Police Department news release.

Responding police and firefighters found a gunshot victim at the scene and transported him to an area hospital with critical, but not fatal injuries, the CMPD reported. He is expected to survive.

Assisted by SWAT team members and a drone, officers assembled outside of a multifamily residential complex in the 2400 block of Newport Boulevard.

Police warned residents at 2 p.m. that a suspect in the shooting remained at-large and urged them to avoid the area.

By 4 p.m., officers had arrested Rodney Otis Rich, 37, of Costa Mesa, and his mother, Tammie Walker, 63, also of Costa Mesa, according to police.

Walker lived in the complex, according to an update from the CMPD.

Whether Walker or Rich knew the unidentified victim is unclear, police said.

The investigation is ongoing. The shooting does not appear to have been gang-related, according to the CMPD.
