Around Town: Speakers event to mark 9/11 25th anniversary at Orange Coast College

The Costa Mesa Historical Society and Orange Coast College on Sunday will mark 25 years since the 9/11 attacks with a free speakers event on the college campus at 2 p.m.

Angie Kardashian — a former Orange County restaurant owner who spent two years cooking meals for 103 New York City fire companies after the cataclysmic events — will share her story of forming lifelong friendships amid a national tragedy and continuing to speak to others about lessons she learned.

Kardashian will be joined by FDNY Captain Michael Donovan, who will share his own perspectives and experiences as a New York City firefighter and reflect on the firefighters, first responders, families and communities forever affected by Sept.11.

The event takes place in Orange Coast College’s College Center. Seating is limited, and reservations may be made by visiting costamesahistory.org/blog and selecting the event. Parking is in Lot C at OCC, 370 Merrimac Way, in Costa Mesa.

Costa Mesa Mayor hosts community talk on Fairview Developmental Center plan

Costa Mesa Mayor John Stephens will lead a community discussion this Thursday night at the Norma Hertzog Community Center, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., sharing updates and information on the city’s Fairview Developmental Center Specific Plan.

The document that will guide the eventual redevelopment of an 80-acre portion of the former state hospital off of Harbor Boulevard into anywhere from 2,300 to 4,000 residential units, including affordable housing, over the next two decades.

Costa Mesa City Council members are scheduled to vote on adopting the plan during a regular meeting on Sept. 15. Participants Thursday are welcome to voice their opinions, ask questions or share their priorities for the specific plan.
