Huntington Beach teen wins spotlight award

Baritone-tenor Alex Torrico, a 17-year-old resident of Huntington Beach,
won in the classical voice category of the 12th annual Spotlight Awards
on Monday.
The awards, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles,
spotlighted 12 young artists from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura
and San Diego counties.
Contestants competed in categories including ballet, jazz and modern
dance, classical instrumental music, jazz instrumental music, classical
voice and nonclassical voice.
This year’s finalists were chosen from 67 semifinalists who auditioned in
January and March. Semifinalists competed among more than 800 high school
students from throughout the country.
Spotlight winners received $5,000 each.
The Edison High School junior sang “Vittoria Mio Core!” at the
competition.
The Spotlight Awards were created in 1988 by Walter Grauman.
