Dries earns honor

Stanford University women’s water polo player Annika Dries was recently named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week.

Dries, who graduated from Laguna Beach High last year, is a freshman for the top-ranked Cardinal (8-0). She scored six goals in four games as Stanford captured its Stanford Invitational title for the first time since 2003, topping Cal, 10-7, in the final Feb. 7.

Dries, a member of the USA women’s national team, had two hat tricks in victories against No. 6 Michigan and No. 7 San Jose State. She has 12 goals on the season, third on Stanford.

Her former teammate, Cal freshman Taylor Dodson, also competed in the Stanford Invitational final. The duo helped lead the Breakers to last year’s CIF Southern Section Division II title.

Dodson has earned substantial playing time as a freshman for the No. 3-ranked Golden Bears (10-1). The lefty has scored six goals.
