Hubbard to be released no later than March 16

Despite being sentenced to 60 days in jail Thursday, former Newport-Mesa Unified Supt. Jeffrey Hubbard should be released no later than about the middle of next month, records show.

Hubbard is set for release March 16, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Inmate Information Center.

He was given a one-day credit from when he was initially booked.

However, because of severe jail overcrowding, many nonviolent offenders are released after serving only a few days, so it is unclear whether Hubbard will be detained even until mid-March. Some in court Thursday speculated he would be out by the end of this weekend.

Hubbard, 55, was taken into custody Thursday after he was sentenced in a Los Angeles courtroom for two felony counts of misappropriation of public funds related to his previous job as superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

He was sentenced to three years’ probation, in addition to the jail time. He was also ordered to pay $6,000 in fines and $23,500 to the Beverly Hills school district for the money he illegally gave to a former subordinate, Karen Anne Christiansen.

Hubbard was fired from his position at Newport-Mesa Unified after his conviction last month.

Deputy Supt. and Chief Business Official Paul Reed took over Hubbard’s duties until the school board tapped former Newport-Mesa Unified Supt. Rob Barbot to head the district once again.

Barbot will also conduct a national search for a replacement. His contract expires July 31.
