Event to benefit Kenyan orphan women

A Newport Beach women’s gym is hosting an online designer sale Thursday to benefit orphaned women in Kenya.

Through its efforts with Empowering Lives International, an Upland-based nonprofit, CrossFit Fly aims to be “empowering women across the globe” as well as women in Orange County, Gena Wueste, an events coordinator and coach for CrossFit, said in an email.

The event, dubbed “Beauty and the Buff,” will be the gym, 3767 Birch St., from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring used clothing, which will then be listed online at Runway Junkie, a web-based marketplace that supports nonprofits. The website’s listing fee will be waived for the event.

Beauty and the Buff festivities also include workouts, facials, body composition testing, food and music, Wueste said.

Empowering Lives helps “fund homes that help young orphan women transition into successful adulthood — a cause that CrossFit Fly owner Jill Baker chose specifically because it benefits young women at a time when they are particularly vulnerable to sex trafficking,” Wueste said.
