Newport man dies in Irvine collision

An 81-year-old Newport Beach man was killed in a traffic collision Friday morning in Irvine, authorities said.

The crash occurred before 7:30 a.m. near University and Michelson drives. Westbound lanes along University Drive, between Michelson and Ridgeline drives were closed while police investigated until about 3:30 p.m., said Lt. Tom Allan.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene from traumatic injuries, Allan said.

The 34-year-old driver of the second car was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with non-life-threatening injuries, Allan said.

Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, preliminary reports show that the 81-year-old was turning into a parking lot near the intersection when he was struck by a car going westbound on University Drive, the release said.

Police will release the identity of the Newport Beach man after his family is notified.
