Newport man dies in Irvine collision

An 81-year-old Newport Beach man was killed in a traffic collision Friday morning in Irvine, authorities said.

The crash occurred before 7:30 a.m. near University and Michelson drives. Westbound lanes along University Drive, between Michelson and Ridgeline drives were closed while police investigated until about 3:30 p.m., said Lt. Tom Allan.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene from traumatic injuries, Allan said.

The 34-year-old driver of the second car was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with non-life-threatening injuries, Allan said.

Although the cause of the accident is still under investigation, preliminary reports show that the 81-year-old was turning into a parking lot near the intersection when he was struck by a car going westbound on University Drive, the release said.

Police will release the identity of the Newport Beach man after his family is notified.

Traffic investigators are asking anyone with information to contact Det. Jonathan Cherney at (949) 724-7024.
