Man held after running from stolen car

Newport Beach police have taken into custody a man who fled from officers when they tried to pull him over early Tuesday near Mar Vista and Vista del Oro.

When the driver refused to stop, the officer ran the vehicle’s license plate and determined that the car had been stolen, said Jennifer Manzella, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department.

The driver pulled over after a short pursuit and took off on foot down a greenbelt.

Corona del Mar High and Eastbluff Elementary schools immediately went on lockdown while police searched for the suspect. By 9:45 a.m., the schools were removed from lockdown, Manzella said.

The man was detained just before 1:30 p.m. near Bristol Street and Campus Drive after an officer spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near John Wayne Airport.

He had not yet been identified by police.
